Best Overall Diving Season in Bali
In general, the best time for scuba diving in Bali is from April to November. This period usually brings drier weather, better underwater visibility, and more comfortable sea conditions in many dive areas.
However, Bali is not a “one-season-only” destination. Sites such as Amed, Tulamben, and Padang Bai can offer enjoyable diving throughout the year.
April: Best Time to See Manta Ray Mating at Nusa Penida
For divers hoping to see manta rays, April is one of the most exciting months to visit Nusa Penida.
At Manta Point, manta rays can be seen throughout the year, but April is especially interesting because divers may have the opportunity to witness manta mating behavior, including manta “mating trains.” This is when several male mantas follow a female manta in a graceful underwater procession.
Manta Point is known for its cleaning stations, where manta rays circle above the reef while cleaner fish remove parasites from their bodies. It is an unforgettable experience for photographers, marine-life lovers, and experienced divers.
August to Mid-November: Mola Mola Season in Bali
If seeing the legendary Mola Mola, also known as the Oceanic Sunfish, is your main goal, plan your Bali diving trip between August and mid-November.
The best area for Mola Mola diving is around Nusa Penida, especially sites such as Crystal Bay and other deeper current-exposed locations. The strongest chance of encounters is usually from August to September, although sightings may continue into October and sometimes mid-November.
Mola Mola usually live in deep, cold water. During the season, cold-water upwellings bring them closer to recreational diving depths, where they visit reef cleaning stations.
Because Mola Mola dives can involve depth, currents, and changing conditions, they are generally more suitable for advanced divers with good buoyancy control and experience in drift diving.
Water Temperature During Mola Mola Season
Bali is known for warm tropical water, but Mola Mola season can be surprisingly cold around Nusa Penida.
During August to mid-November, water temperatures can drop to around 21°C, especially when cold thermoclines or upwellings move through the dive site. In some deeper areas, the temperature may feel even colder.
Divers planning to hunt for Mola Mola should consider using:
- A 5 mm wetsuit
- Hood or hooded vest
- Gloves, if appropriate for the operator and local conditions
- Good buoyancy control, as thicker exposure protection changes weighting needs

Tulamben and the USAT Liberty Wreck
Tulamben is home to the famous USAT Liberty Wreck, one of Bali’s most iconic dive sites. The wreck is accessible from the shore and begins at relatively shallow depths, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced divers.
The USAT Liberty is covered in coral and attracts schools of fish, turtles, macro life, and many other marine species. It is also an excellent location for night diving and underwater photography.
